Early summer saw us start our SHEROES summer activities programme out in Hamsterley Forest, County Durham. It has been a few months since we’d been together and there were some new faces to welcome. The SHEROES are a group of inner city Muslim girls aged 8-14 years old, who have been meeting since 2017. There is a movement through the group as the girls age and move on to do their GCSEs and ‘A’ levels, we think, with a lot more confidence and self-awareness.
This year’s summer programme saw us starting off with bush crafting skills and fire starting. Working with Neil from Cycle4Adventure, the girls learnt under a suspended air ballon canopy how to collect kindling and different sized twigs and wood to start a fire safely and to keep it maintained.
Check out the Air Balloon Canopy here.
What I loved about our first session back together was by the end of it, not only were the girls exhausted but they had made new friends, new skills and were excited about the rest of the programme to follow.
